Enjoying a rich-flavored glass of wine after a long day is something most of us indulge in. In fact, on average, the average American drinks nearly 2.3 gallons of alcohol per year!

For a wine enthusiast who wants to take their love for fine wine to the next level, wanting a wine cellar or an at-home bar is only natural.

However, you might find yourself a little lost in this endeavor.

Before you start building a wine cellar at home, you have to consider a few important factors and practices. This will not only give you a state-of-art storage area but will also increase your home’s resale value in case you decide to sell it in the future.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Wine Cellar: The Purpose to Bear in Mind

What are you using the wine cellar for? Well, to stack wine, of course.

But is that all?

Traditionally, wine cellars are built in basements. You can opt for the right lighting, concrete or tile flooring, and more. Now, wine cellars are considered to be destination spaces where you can host guests and enjoy an intimate wine-tasting experience.

Here are a few ways you can incorporate wine-specific areas in your home.

Wine Rooms

If you’re a serious oenophile, you can set aside a casual space or an elaborate room to enjoy your favorite vintage wines. You can include a storage area and specialized racking systems to showcase your gorgeous wine collection.

Unlike cellars that are traditionally underground, wine rooms can be set in living spaces to showcase within your home. However, you’ll have to consider speciality design, installation, and maintenance for them.

Wine Bars

Cozier than wine rooms but more casual, wine bars can be discreetly tucked into a space just like furniture or can be made to be the focal point of a room. Custom-designed bars can reflect the theme you want and will incorporate the necessary features needed for a masterful bar. Of course, you’ll have to opt for ambient lighting, comfy seating, storage solutions for glassware and other supplies, and bar sinks, however, it’ll be a fun experience to have.

It’s All About Location

Like we said, traditionally wine cellars belonged in the basement. But, if you have a contemporary home that has the space to host a wine room or bar in a living space, you should definitely opt for it. If you strictly want a cellar (but one that isn’t underground), you can install one in the kitchen or under a staircase. Wherever you decide to build your cellar, ensure the space is cool and humid. If it isn’t, you may have to opt for additional tools.

What’s the Ideal Size for a Wine Cellar?

Next, you need to determine the size of the wine cellar. This, of course, directly depends on how much space you have, the number of wine bottles you hope to store, activities you plan on hosting, and your budget. For example, the size of the cellar that just needs to store your wine collection will be very different from a cellar/room you want to host gatherings in.

Wine Racks for the Cellar

Wine racks are another important element of wine cellars. There are two options that you’ll need to choose from: premade wine racks or custom-made wine racks.

What you choose highly depends on the budget you have at hand. If you can spare the cost needed to go for custom-made ones, you’ll end up with better materials and great finishes. However, if you can’t, there are tons of options for premade racks.

However, bear in mind that your prized possessions, your wine bottles will be stacked on these racks. So we recommend that you only invest in wine racks that feature premium quality finishes and are made of stunning material. After all, the wine racks you choose can make or break the appeal of your wine cellar.

Wine Cellar Doors

Lastly, the most important aspect of your wine cellar that is going to make or break the aesthetic of your space: the wine cellar door. Your cellar door needs to do a great job of having a good sealing mechanism, and also giving your space a visual edge.

If your cellar is for hanging out and drinking wine, you should consider stylized wine cellar door options to enhance the cellar’s appeal. Your best bet: wrought iron doors. They’re functional, elegant, and customizable—everything your at-home cellar needs.
